Hyvä or your existing Magento theme: how to choose

By the AXELITES team

Your Magento store needs to evolve and you are deciding between improving its current theme and moving to Hyvä. The decision depends on customer journeys, customisations and the actual causes of current problems. A theme change should address an identified need.

This guide compares both options on the same scope. It separates the storefront, checkout and business integrations to help you identify significant dependencies before committing to a redesign.

1. Start with the store’s actual problems

List problematic situations: mobile navigation, search, product pages, cart or order placement. Measure loading and examine errors on representative journeys. A server or API problem will not automatically disappear when the theme changes.

Connect each problem to an objective: make variant selection easier, reduce first-screen resources or simplify frontend maintenance. Use this list as the shared basis for both proposals.

2. Compare improving the current theme with rebuilding the frontend

Keeping the theme may make sense when its structure is understood, dependencies are maintained and fixes are well scoped. Targeted improvements avoid rebuilding journeys that already work. Check that this does not simply extend a foundation that has become too difficult to maintain.

Hyvä provides another foundation for a Magento storefront. The project requires examining visual components and extensions that run in the browser. Effort therefore depends on functionality and required adaptations as well as the number of designs.

3. Build a module compatibility matrix

Inventory storefront modules: search, filters, configurators, promotions, reviews, payment and shipping. For each installed version, ask whether a compatible integration exists, who maintains it and how it will be tested. Custom modules need a frontend code review.

Hyvä documents compatibility modules. Their existence does not automatically validate your combination of versions and customisations. Classify dependencies as compatible pending verification, adaptation required, replacement or an unresolved decision.

  • Actual module function and installed version.
  • Affected journeys, owner and compatibility evidence.
  • Estimated adaptation and planned acceptance scenario.

4. Make a separate checkout decision

Choosing a theme does not settle the checkout choice. Review the current solution, Hyvä Checkout or another compatible option. Hyvä also documents a fallback mechanism to a Luma theme for selected journeys. Required features and available integrations should guide the decision.

Test the payment methods, delivery options, addresses, discounts and B2B rules you actually use. Check applicable licensing and support terms when scoping the project. Theme availability alone does not establish the total cost.

5. Estimate two options against a common scope

Include design, implementation, modules, checkout, testing, deployment and follow-up in both options. Distinguish one-off work from recurring costs. Account for time your own team needs for validation and content maintenance.

Illustrative scenario: a store has a custom product configurator and several shipping rules. Before deciding, prototype a representative product page and a complete order journey. Discovered adaptations may change cost and timing regardless of the initially preferred option.

6. Validate the decision with evidence

Compare the trial against the original objectives using similar devices and conditions. Document supported features, remaining limitations and maintenance arrangements. A performance score alone does not replace a successful order and usable administration.

The decision may be to fix the existing theme, prepare a Hyvä migration or postpone the change until after an audit. Retain a short rationale and launch criteria: confirmed compatibility, prepared acceptance tests, available people and a defined transition plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hyvä guarantee higher sales?
No. Sales depend on many factors. Measure performance and usability, then relate them to customer journeys and business data under comparable conditions.
Do all Magento modules need replacing?
Not necessarily. Review the modules actually used and their interaction with the frontend and checkout. Some can remain; others need adaptation or replacement.
Can we temporarily keep our current checkout?
This depends on the solution and its versions. Evaluate Hyvä’s documented compatibility and fallback options on your configuration, then test the required payment and shipping methods.
